Renewing your car licence online

How to renew your car licence online

First time renewing your car licence?

Once a year, we have to keep our vehicle licence up to date. If not, there’s a pretty fine to pay. And even though the process is not that often, sometimes we’re not always able to wait in the long queues. Rest assured, you can plan ahead and save some time with the eNATIS system.

So, how do you renew your car licence online?

Getting started

Once you get the renewal notice in the post, you can get on with the process. The great thing about this site is that anyone can use it. If this is your first time, you’ll need to sign up and register to the National Traffic Information System (eNATIS); you can do this via mobile or computer.  You will need to follow the instructions and submit the relevant information.

The renewal process

Once you sign in, the options that are offered are as follows:

  1. Drivers Licence Card
  2. Learners Licence Test
  3. Drivers Licence Test
  4. PrDP Application
  5. Renew Vehicle Licence
  6. Request a slot

Click on the renew vehicle option and follow the prompts.

Note: If you did not get the renewal notice in the post, you may have to download and fill in a MVL1 application. You can find the document on the eNATIS system.

How collection works

If you decide to collect from the post office, bring your green ID book or smart card, and renewal notice. Once you’ve taken your renewal notice and made payment (whether at the traffic department or post office), you’ll be able to collect it then and there.

If you’ve gone through the eNATIS system, all you have to do is pay using your debit or credit card. This would be followed by your address for delivery. Only once you’ve completed the process, you should receive your new licence disc directly from the courier within 48 to 72 hours.

The cost of your renewed licence will depend on the vehicle’s size and weight.

PREPARE for your car licence renewal ahead of time

Even though you have a 21-day grace period after the licence has expired, remember to apply for renewal 4 weeks BEFORE the expiry date.
