The New Kia Sonet Review

Word on the street is that the new Kia Sonet has undergone a notable change. Launched in June of 2024, Kia’s competitive pricing and variety have made it incredibly likeable. The Sonet manages to sport style and comfort in a way that exudes the kind of confidence you want on the commute. No matter where you live in South Africa, from Johannesburg’s busy roads to Cape Town’s windy city, this vehicle certainly has gusto.

It’s easy to see why it won Sorento’s premium SUV car of the year award.

The 2024 Kia Sonet: SA’s Award-Winning SUV

Here’s a nippy SUV you never thought you needed, especially if you’re planning to start a family or want to cross borders out on the open road. The updates on this vehicle are practical and cozy, everything about the Sonet is tempting. From retail price to just getting around town in general, whatever your needs are, the Kia Sonet covers. The Sonet consists of six derivatives, from the entry model 1.5 LX manual to the top of the range 1.5 SX automatic.

New and improved

Kia’s classic tiger grille and LED light housings give off a ready-to-pounce energy, much like a tiger.

There's something really cool about how the front headlights and bumper reflect the tailgate's design continuity, creating a uniform and orderly look from front to back.

The folding electric side mirrors are a nice bonus for those who want more room in a tight parking space.

The cabin itself offers the driver and passengers an upmarket look and feel, with ample legroom and comfortable seating. Looking ahead, you have the auto-dimming rear-view mirror, making it easier to avoid bright headlights into the night.

Your passengers will be even happier when they discover the automatic climate control option. For those seeking a more luxurious finish, the top-of-the-range models feature a faux-leather covered steering wheel and seats, finished with high-quality contrast stitching.

In terms of boot space, some crossovers and SUVs have limited height due to the spare wheel and tools. However, the Kia Sonet keeps its height, making it a must-have for those looking to carry more than just basic essentials.

Looking beyond the cabin, what stands out are the edgy and beautiful Diamond-cut 16-inch alloy wheels. These were designed to make a bold statement both in motion and at a standstill.

Entertainment and connectivity

Modern road users will appreciate the 8-inch touch curve display infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - so you can choose your next route and listen to Spotify without any hassle.

Safety features

If that hasn’t convinced you yet, the Sonet includes a Rear-View Monitor to assist you with parking from any direction. If you’re nervous about backing up, the Sonet also comes with Parking Distance Warning, which alerts you as you maneuver in and out of tight spaces.

All Sonet models come with a front passenger and driver airbag, an ISOfix child seat anchor point, ABS brakes, and stability control.

The Sonet performance

Fuel

In terms of fuel consumption, the Kia Sonet range is fairly good. With the 1.5-litre LX manual, you'll average 6.6 litres per 100 km, but with the slightly higher models, like the LX Auto and EX, consumption drops to 6.2 litres per 100 km. However, it is a matter of how and where you drive.

Power

As far as stamina and drive goes, the Sonet derivatives can produce 85 kW/144 Nm (1.5 LX) and 88 kW/172 Nm (EX 1.0 T-Gdi). For those who want a bit more vroom, the Sonet EX really packs a punch in terms of performance, making it an exciting option for those who desire a spirited drive while maintaining efficiency and practicality.

Ready to rumble

With such a large number of options and a price that is very affordable, this SUV is an absolute value added vehicle that will leave you feeling good about your purchase.
