The Mazda CX-30, nestled snugly between its CX-3 and CX-5 siblings, gets its sprightly driving dynamics from the popular Mazda 3 hatchback. Unmistakably adorned with Mazda's latest design language, the CX-30 effortlessly exudes an air of elegance that belies its modest price tag. Inside, the cabin is clad in premium materials.
The Mazda's newest offering comes in four distinct trim levels for South African car aficionados - the Active, Dynamic, Individual, and Carbon Edition. Though some international markets offer the CX-30 with a 2.5-litre engine, or even a turbocharged variant, South African CX-30s rely on the tried-and-true 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated SkyActiv-G 4-cylinder petrol engine. Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, this engine is capable of unleashing 121 kW and 213 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels confidently. Meanwhile, Mazda promises a mere 6.6l/100 km fuel efficiency.
Standard features
With an abundance of premium materials that lend an air of sophistication, the 2023 Mazda CX-30 easily eclipses its entry-level crossover competitors. In fact, the overall cabin atmosphere, especially in higher trims, rivals that of luxury SUVs.
The standard spec boasts a plethora of features, including keyless push-button start, MZD Connect infotainment with an 8.8-inch screen, and even support for Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Safety is also prioritised, with front, driver and passenger-side, driver's knee, side, and curtain airbags, as well as ABS with EBD and dynamic stability control - all standard. Meanwhile, LED headlamps, cruise control, Head-up display (HUD), Bose Sound System, and 16-inch grey metallic alloy wheels round out the impressive list of standard features.
The Dynamic trim level adds a touch of sportiness with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, along with the convenience of rear air vents, dual-zone climate control, smart advanced keyless entry, and rear parking sensors.
For those pondering the added cost of the top-of-the-range Individual model, allow us to enlighten you. The Individual CX-30 not only boasts the impressive standard features of its lesser siblings but also throws in some desirable extras. These include a reverse-view camera, allowing you to maneuver effortlessly into even the tightest of spots. A sleek frameless auto-dimming rear-view mirror ensures you always have a clear view of the world behind you. And to elevate the cabin experience even further, the Individual sports a luxurious leather upholstery and a BOSE audio system with an impressive 12 speakers, enveloping you in crystal-clear sound. Outside, 18-inch silver-metallic alloy wheels make a bold statement, demanding attention at every turn.
For a more distinctive look, the Carbon Edition adds to the CX-30's already impressive design with new black cloth seats accented with striking red stitching detail. Its 18-inch black alloy wheels and polished black exterior mirrors further set it apart from its peers, making the Carbon Edition a true standout.
Take a seat in the CX-30, and you'll find that both the driver and front passenger are granted ample room to stretch out and get comfortable. Meanwhile, the rear seaet provides enough space to accommodate two adults or three little ones with ease. But for those towering passengers, the elegantly tapered roofline may be a hindrance, leaving them feeling a little cramped in the headroom department.
When it comes to stowing your gear, the CX-30 does the job, though it may not be quite as spacious as some of its competitors. Mazda claims a 295-litre capacity so that you can easily pack in plenty of groceries or weekend bags. But for bulkier items, the 60:40-split rear seatback can be folded down to expand the available space, allowing you to transport everything you need for your next adventure.
If you're thinking about picking up a Mazda CX-30, you'll be pleased to know that a range of pricing options are available. The entry-level model starts at R497 700, while the mid-spec 2.0 Dynamic derivative will set you back to R529 600 (as of Feb 2023). For those looking to really splash out, the flagship Individual version is priced at R573 100. The Carbon Edition goes for R540 200. (Prices correct at time of publication.)
But no matter which CX-30 model you opt for, you can rest easy knowing you're getting top-notch service and support. Every CX-30 comes with a 3-year/unlimited-kilometre service plan, as well as a factory warranty, a 5-year corrosion warranty, and 3 years' worth of roadside assistance.
