Car theft and what it means for Car Insurance

In the unfortunate event you become a victim of car theft or any car-related crime, you will probably feel rattled, shaken up, and stressed. However, knowing what to do and who to call could help prevent any unnecessary panic and uncertainty, that’s why we’ve covered some of the basics. Keep these tips in mind so that you’re prepared and taken care of should you find yourself in this situation.

Car Insurance: what to do if your vehicle’s been stolen?

Having Car Insurance, especially in South Africa, is an investment more than it is a luxury, especially in the eyes of the responsible car owner. If you’re someone who owns one of the more popular vehicles that seasoned criminals target, then it would be important to get a policy that fits.

With every vehicle loss, financial fallout can be devastating, especially if you’re not covered. The good news is, it’s not too late. There are a number of things you can do to ensure you’re getting everything you need out of your policy and how you can move forward in the case your car is stolen.

File a claim with your insurance providers

  • Notify your car security and tracker company

To even get word back from your insurer, it’s imperative that you have the right security measurements put in place. If you’ve done so, give your tracker company a call and notify them of your situation. Most cases, you won’t qualify for insurance unless you have security and tracking systems installed, especially if your vehicle is under a finance agreement.

  • Report to the police and get a case number

Never wait too long to phone in after the event has happened. Be sure to call the police as soon as you can and fill in the necessary paperwork to open a case. This is an essential part of the insurance claim process. You will also need to bring the relevant documents with you and have the following information ready: your driver’s licence, registration, vehicle colour and model as well as the VIN number.

Before you leave the station, ask for a certified copy and keep your case number top-of-mind.

  • Tell your insurance provider

Your insurer will ask for similar information that you’ve provided to the police along with all the extra details. Once all of the reports are in, investigation will go ahead.

What to expect with your ‘pay out’?

The payout depends on the value of your stolen vehicle. If your car goes unrecovered, insurance typically pays out the stipulated value of your car, not including the excess. The cash value is based on what your vehicle was worth at the time it was stolen, and taking factors like age, condition, mileage into consideration.

With that said, it’s important that you get the best affordable Car Insurance quote out there. There are different types of Car Insurance cover, and it will vary from person to person. Whether it’s Comprehensive, Third-party, Fire & Theft, or Third-Party Only; make sure you know what you’re covered for and paying for.
